The Red Cross varied by order department, but a red cross had to be present on Templar clothing; it was considered the official symbol (though other colors existed). Pope and the King of France required knights to wear symbols at all times, under penalty of a ban on water or food. One explanation links to Pope Urban II tearing a crimson cape and distributing pieces sewn as crosses; the campaign became a crusade, and red crosses spread.
