The Yupik people of western Alaska view their relationship with animals as cooperative and reciprocal. Sea Otter Spirit Masks use circular hoops to symbolize movement between natural and supernatural realms, while central rings reflect shamanic visions. Animal figures and spirit faces represent souls, and openings in the hands may symbolize portals through which animal spirits return to sustain life.
