Chickens and roosters were bred about 4,000 years ago, later than other farm animals, largely due to ancient Persians. In Persia, the cult of the rooster arose. Alongside the dog, the rooster was revered: one guarded home and flock, the other was messenger of morning, light, and sun. Its crow protected from evil forces. On Persian carpets, the rooster symbolizes protection from evil eyes.
