Jonah and the whale is a story of initiation, symbolic death, and rebirth. Jonah, chosen by God as a prophet, fled from warning Ninevah of judgement; sailors threw him into the sea to propitiate the Gods, calming the storm. A huge “fish” swallowed him; after three days and nights, Jonah chose to deliver the prophesy rather than remain inside the whale.
