The serpent symbolizes the opposite of lofty spiritual heights, yet carries diverse meanings: evil and healing powers; cunning and wisdom; so base it may reach greatest spiritual heights. It is a phallic symbol, yet also one of the oldest emblems of female power—e.g., held by priestesses on Knossos as a symbol of their wisdom and power.
