Inuit seal masks emerged within ritual contexts involving dance, song, and drumming, and are best understood through these practices. The masks represent the seal’s Yua, or soul, as well as the collective souls of seals, often combining animal and human features. They emphasize shamanic transformation and were based on visions, with ring shaped rods symbolizing bubbles rising through water.
