The spider as creator/creatrix: in many myths it weaves the universe’s fabric; cobweb fragility suggests an illusory veil of “reality” called Maya in Vedic scriptures. Weaving/spinning also links to the Fates in Greek mythology and in the Qu’ran. Native Americans called the spider the “Thinking Woman,” who can make the world or destroy it if displeased. Used for divination; the African bird-eating spider is said to disturb placed symbols at its home entrance, and the disturbances are read as auguries.
